HDR Supervision Development Framework

The ANU has introduced a Higher Degree Research (HDR) Supervision Development Framework, to foster and support best practice in the supervision of HDR candidates. The Framework is summarised in the graphic above. It comprises a range of development opportunities, both online and face-to-face; a suite of online resources; and the ANU HDR Supervisor Register.

All ANU staff who supervise HDR candidates, and all Chairs of Panels and Primary Supervisors who are not ANU staff members, must join the register to be eligible to supervise candidates. All registered HDR supervisors must subsequently complete an annual qualifying activity to maintain their registration. There’s more information about registration and renewal processes on the HDR supervision registration and renewal and the HDR supervision annual registration renewal webpages.

Research suggests the core elements underpinning the Framework enhance both supervisor and candidate satisfaction, and improve thesis quality and completion rates. These elements include awareness of good practice principles and strategies; familiarity with policy and process requirements; and constructive conversations with peers about supervision. This research is summarised in the HDR Supervision Portal.
