Types of mentoring:
Academic

I believe mentoring is important because navigating life is a tricky task. Talking through issues and drawing on others experience has been a big help for me, and it has been surprisingly helpful when I’ve sought advice from beyond normal career and social circles. At the ANU I’ve benefited from formal and informal mentors and hope to give back.

I’m an unconventional academic and will probably be of most help for those wanting to talk through issues on navigating competing priorities as well as research engagement and impact. I’ve had a number of roles in medicine before coming to the ANU – a GP in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, policy work at an NGO and an epidemiologist in a government authority. My work focuses on implementation and my main strength is as a connector - between disciplines and with the university, government and NGOs. Life outside of work is my first priority – I’m a father to a three-year-old, husband to a dedicated GP obstetrician, and mildly obsessed with trail running.
