ANU International Office

ANU International Office (AIO) is a central resource responsible for supporting Executive-level priorities for strategic international engagement. AIO seeks to promote a cohesive and comprehensive University-wide approach to global engagement by: 

  • driving and supporting the implementation of the objectives and intentions of the international strategy and supporting regional plans
  • acting as a University-wide resource for strategic international engagement expertise, including by building networks and collaboration with international relations practitioners across the University 
  • providing strategic country-specific advice to stakeholders across the University 
  • establishing frameworks and processes to coordinate and streamline University-wide strategic international engagement activities
  • identifying, developing, supporting and managing strategic international partnerships. 

AIO is part of the International strategy portfolio and reports to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International Strategy). The team works in close collaboration with the ANU International Liaison Offices, which are China Liaison Office in Beijing and North America Liaison Office in Washington D.C.

AIO Key Functions

  • Agreements and partnerships: Provide strategic advice on international partnerships and agreements (including compliance with university-policies); act as a central coordination point for international agreements (excluding research-specific and funding-related agreements); maintain the University’s central agreements repository.
  • Strategic Analysis and Briefing: Develop concise and in-depth informative briefing documents to support international engagement; conduct data-informed and evidence-based research to support the Executive and the wider University.
  • International alliances: Coordinate and drive university-wide engagement in strategic alliances including the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU), Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU).
  • International visits & protocol: Tailoring visits to ANU and international engagements by the Executive to meet the strategic goals of the University.
  • Regional expertise: Develop and provide strategic advice to the Executive and wider University on bilateral partnerships; collect and disseminate intelligence and research on education and research developments and opportunities in key countries/regions; drive and strengthen strategic relationships with key partners.
  • Global programs:  Enhance ANU learning opportunities for students and provide international opportunities that can be credited towards their degrees.
