Rollout of National Broadband Network (NBN) to ANU

The NBN rollout to ANU will upgrade the existing fixed line phone infrastructure within the ANU campus, as well as in properties off campus, that are either owned or leased by ANU to provision high speed phone and internet broadband access.

Overview

NBN Co Pty Ltd, the company responsible for rolling out the National Broadband Network (NBN) has contacted ANU about upgrading the existing fixed line phone infrastructure within the ANU campus, as well as in properties off campus, that are either owned or leased by ANU. ITS is actively working with NBNCo to develop a coordinated migration plan for upgrading the affected fixed phone lines to NBN services. While no plans/timeline for these changes has been advised by NBNCo, it is anticipated that the upgrade will occur during the first or second quarter of 2015.

What is being done?

In almost all cases the upgrade to NBN will primarily effect ANU commercial tenancies, i.e. private business operators in Union Court and other sites on the Acton campus who may use fixed phone lines (also called landlines) for operating their phone, ADSL broadband or other business services (e.g. EFTPoS). Facilities & Services are working with ITS to collate a detailed listing and will contact each of the affected parties to update them on the migration plan.

How can you help?

You can help by informing our Project Manager of any direct fixed Telstra phone lines you are aware of in your area. These may be servicing things such as fax machines, EFTPoS devices or simply a direct phone line that is not a PABX extension. We would rather be made aware of something than not, so if you're not sure, please  let us know and we can then provide further advice, information and guidance on services which may be impacted.

Please do not directly contact NBNCo, as the changes are being managed via ITS for the whole of the ANU.

Outcomes

The upgrade will facilitate increased broadband speeds, a forklift from the current ADSL2+ downstream/upstream speeds of 4-7Mbps/1Mbps to the very fast DSL speeds of anywhere up to 60Mbps/20Mbps. The speeds can vary depending on distance from the exchange.
