Managing Your Approved Human Research Ethics Protocol

Amending an approved ANU Human Research Ethics protocol

If you need to amend your original research protocol (after approval has been given), you are required to submit an amendment to your approved HREA or legacy form (protocol transferred from ARIES) in REMS for further review by the ANU HREC Chair. The HREC Chair does not grant retrospective approval for changes to research projects and you must gain approval before commencing with the varied protocol.

Please note: any amendment requests submitted by ANU students must also be supported by the Supervisor.

ANU Human Research Ethics protocol conditions

As per the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2018) guidelines, research projects that have received Human Ethics approval will need to provide an annual report annually until the project has been completed. REMS will send a notification email when a annual report is due and researchers are required to submit this report at their earliest convenience.

When the data collection phase of the research project is complete, you need to advise the Human Ethics Office. To do this, please submit an expiry report through REMS. REMS will send a notification email when a expiry report is due if your protocol has reached the maximum 5 year approval date.

It is possible to re-open a completed protocol if further data collection is needed. Please contact the Human Ethics Office in this instance.
