Policy news: Honorary degrees policy

20 Oct 2015

The Honorary Degrees Committee has recently reviewed the conditions under which the title "Dr" may be used by the recipient of an honorary degree. The Honorary Degrees Committee has taken the view that the current conditions are too broad, and expose the University to the risk that a recipient inappropriately uses the title of "Dr" when engaging in public discourse, misleading the public as to their true area of expertise.

Consequently the Council has accepted the Committee's recommendation that the Honorary Degrees policy be amended to only allow ANU honorary degree recipients to use the title of "Dr" when participating in any activity or event associated with the University, and at in no other context or place.
