Accessing your email

UPDATED 5 MARCH 2025

To log in to your ANU email account via the web, visit https://outlook.com/anu.edu.au.

Your ANU email credentials are:

• User Name: your University ID (e.g. u1234567)
• Password: your ANU password

The first time you access your ANU email via the web, an authentication pop-up will appear. Follow the on-screen instructions to approve the sign-in request.

Note: You will only be prompted for credentials, language, and time zone once on each new device you use. Change the time zone to English (Australia) and adjust the time zone to UTC+10.00 Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney.

Important: Don't select 'Remember Password' when prompted, as this will allow other users to sign in to your email account.

When finished, always select 'Sign Out' at the top right, and close the web browser completely. On a shared resource computer, access to your ANU personal email will not be available via the locally installed mail client.

When you log in to the Outlook web app (webmail) you will only see one mailbox. To view other mailboxes, click on your name at the top right of the webmail interface and select 'Open other mailbox'. Enter the mailbox name, and the webmail interface will switch to that mailbox. You can also configure your mailbox in an email client using the guides provided.

Auto-forwarding emails

From Monday 2 June 2025, the University will be disabling automatic email forwarding from your ANU account to external mailboxes for all ANU staff and visiting and honorary appointments (VaHAs). This means that staff and VaHAs will no longer be able to automatically forward all incoming emails to non-ANU email accounts. Students and shared mailboxes may be included in a future phase of this roll-out.

Why this change is necessary

The University is legally responsible to protect how we manage, share, and secure staff, student, and ANU data. By disabling automatic email forwarding to external providers, we’re taking an important step to protect sensitive information from the risk of being shared with unintended recipients.
