New WHS eLearning Modules
Safety and Wellbeing (S&W) has facilitated the creation of three (3) new WHS eLearning modules (the Modules), which are now available in Pulse to review and provide feedback. The Modules will be officially released later in Q3 2026 with further information on the transition to these Modules as part of an update to the University’s WHS training matrix. The Modules will replace existing WHS modules to ensure our training is up-to-date and to improve the learning experience of users.
Purpose of the Modules:
- WHS induction (Tier 1) – Pulse code WHSI26: Fundamental requirements to work in a safe and inclusive manner in the University workplace (including basic WHS hazard identification and response).
- Practical WHS risk management – Pulse code WHSP01: Advanced training about WHS risk management from a practical perspective (this training builds on Tier 1 WHS induction). The aim of the training is to help employees embed WHS risk management practices into all work, teaching and research activities.
- WHS management for supervisors – Pulse code WHSM01: Scenario based training to prepare and support supervisors and managers with essential knowledge and skills to lead and manage health, safety and inclusiveness in the University workplace.
Why do we need to complete WHS training?
The University has a WHS duty to ensure it provides training and information to its workers and others to protect the health and safety of all persons who may be impacted by the University’s operation (See Section 19 of the WHS Act).
The primary intent of WHS legislation is to eliminate or minimise risk to the health and safety of workers and others (includes students). University work, teaching and research presents a diverse range of hazards which pose a risk to health and safety.
The WHS induction module is the first stage of instructing employees and HDR students in the typical hazards in the workplace and how to eliminate or minimise the risk of harm from those hazards.
The practical WHS risk management module builds on the initial WHS induction module by helping the learner embed WHS risk management processes into their thinking and practical activities.
The WHS management for supervisors module guides a manager and/or supervisor in how to fulfil their WHS responsibilities to support the University in maintaining a healthy, safe and inclusive workplace.
If you have any questions about health, safety and inclusiveness in your work area, talk to your supervisor/manager in the first instance, and seek advice or support from whs@anu.edu.au as required.
WHSMS Handbook
The Handbook provides practical guidance on how to implement the University’s Work Health and Safety Management System (WHSMS) and for our people (both management, workers and students) to comply with their respective WHS responsibilities (see Sections 28 and 29 of the WHS Act).
From July 2026, the University will start to align the WHSMS (the Handbook) to the international standard, AS/NZS ISO45001: Occupational health and safety management systems – Requirements with guidance for use (the Standard) (See attached Comcare information).
We will all contribute to the alignment of the WHSMS (Handbook) to the Standard. Alignment aims to simplify and strengthen our practical WHS activities to assure the workplace is healthy and safe. If you have any questions on how to simplify your work activities in a pragmatic yet complaint manner, please contact whs@anu.edu.au. More information on the alignment process will be released towards the end of Q3 2026.
