Schedule 2. Casual sessional academic activities and rates

Transition arrangements

S2.1.  The updated definitions of casual sessional academic activities as outlined in this Schedule will come into effect from 1 January 2024.

S2.2.  Prior to 1 January 2024, casual sessional academic activities will continue to be defined in accordance with Schedule 2 of The Australian National University Enterprise Agreement 2017-2021, but will receive the salary increases provided in accordance with clause 22 (Salary) of this Agreement.

Casual sessional rates of pay

S2.3.  Casual sessional academic (CSA) staff will be paid at the sessional rates specified below derived from the following formula: relevant full-time salary divided by 52 divided by 37.5 multiplied by hours multiplied by loading of 25%.

S2.4.  A CSA will be entitled to a CSA Experience rate at the next highest salary point in the salary range where the staff member has been employed teaching in excess of four teaching periods.

S2.5.  The CSA rate of pay for teaching activities set in this schedule will encompass the following in addition to the delivery of Principal/autonomous (S2.7) or Supplementary/scaffolding (S2.9) teaching activity:

  1. preparing of teaching activities;
  2. for contemporaneous marking for the students for whom the CSA staff member is responsible;
  3. administration directly associated with a teaching activity, such as administration of relevant records of students for whom the CSA staff member is responsible;
  4. consultation with students involving face to face consultation immediately prior to and following a face to face teaching activity;
  5. online consultation (e.g. email, messages, forums) immediately prior to and following an online teaching activity; and
  6. attendance at meetings specifically for the purpose of assisting the CSA staff member to prepare for their teaching activity and which are intended as a substitute for preparation that the staff member would have otherwise had to undertake.

S2.6.  For the purposes of this provision, ‘contemporaneous marking’ means marking that is performed during a teaching activity, or marking work that could have reasonably been performed during the teaching activity, for example, marking oral presentations delivered during class.

S2.7.  Principal/autonomous form of Delivery

The term ‘Principal form of Delivery’ means any principal form for education delivery where selected information on the course topic is delivered to the students for the first time during a teaching activity of a specified duration published in the University timetable.

The term ‘Autonomous form of Delivery’ means that the academic takes full responsibility for conceptualisation, creation and delivery of the content and pedagogy associated with a teaching activity.

Examples include:

  • conceptualise, create and deliver a series of learning activities;
  • conceptualise, create and deliver diagnostic, formative and summative assessment activities;
  • conceptualise, create and provide physical and digital resources to support structured and/or scaffolded teaching tasks by other academics; and
  • provide direction or feedback to other academics while they conduct structured or scaffolded teaching activities.

A CSA staff member required to deliver a Principal/autonomous teaching activity (or equivalent delivery through face-to-face teaching mode) of a specified duration and the related directly associated non-contact duties in the nature of preparation, reasonably contemporaneous marking and student consultation will be paid at a rate for each hour of teaching activity delivered, in accordance with the following table.

S2.8.  For the purposes of this Schedule the following definitions apply:

Basic Principal/autonomous form of delivery rate: Paid where the teacher is provided with the course outline and materials for the teaching activity. The rate also includes preparation and student consultation.

Developed Principal/autonomous form of delivery rate: Paid where the teacher assumes significant responsibility for planning and developing a course, unit or subject, or a large part of a unit as well as teaching, or where a teaching activity or small group of teaching activities calls for special expertise. This rate is also paid where the staff member has responsibility for the full educational and academic administrative responsibilities of a course other than the items reserved for the Course Convenor.

Specialised Principal/autonomous form of delivery rate: Paid to a distinguished visiting scholar for a single teaching activity or for each teaching activity in a small group of teaching activities and for specialised teaching activities by experts in a field of study.

Repeat Principal/autonomous form of delivery rate: As additional major preparation is not assumed to be required, the repeat Principal form of Delivery rate provides for two hours of work. Minor modification and student engagement and consultation is still required.

The CSA rate in a repeat Principal form of Delivery applies to a second or subsequent delivery of substantially the same Principal form of Delivery in the same subject matter within a period of seven days, and any marking and student consultation reasonably contemporaneous with it.

S2.9.  Supplementary/scaffolded form of Delivery

The term ‘Supplementary form of delivery’ means any supplementary form of education delivery, for example: where matters covered elsewhere in the course content are discussed, applied in practice, clarified or elaborated; workshops; and laboratory sessions.  A ‘supplementary form of delivery’ is led by a teacher, and may be delivered face to face or through a different mode.

The term ‘Scaffolded form of delivery’ means that the academic facilitates scaffolded learning activities where the content and pedagogy are largely pre-determined and the academic may be supported with digital or physical teaching resources including guidelines or teaching notes.

Examples include facilitating scaffolded:

  • in-person or online workshops; or
  • diagnostic, formative or summative assessments; or
  • practicum or WIL activities; or
  • laboratory, studio or fieldwork activities.

For the purposes of this Schedule the following definitions will apply

Standard Supplementary/scaffolded form of delivery rate: Paid when a CSA staff member is required to lead a ‘supplementary form of delivery’ (or equivalent delivery through other than face-to-face teaching mode) of a specified duration and the related directly associated non-contact duties in the nature of preparation, reasonably contemporaneous marking and student consultation, will be paid at a rate for each hour of ‘supplementary form of delivery’ delivered or presented, according to the following table.

Repeat Supplementary/scaffolded form of delivery rate: Applies to a second or subsequent delivery of substantially the same ‘supplementary form of delivery’ in the same subject matter within a period of seven days and any marking and student consultation reasonably contemporaneous with it.

In considering the number of students in each ‘supplementary form of delivery’, each area will consider the staff-student ratio to ensure that the quality of the educational experience for students does not diminish.

A CSA staff member required to deliver or present a Supplementary/scaffolded teaching activity (or equivalent delivery through other than face-to-face teaching mode) of a specified duration and the related directly associated non-contact duties in the nature of preparation, reasonably contemporaneous marking and student consultation, will be paid at a rate for each hour of teaching activity delivered or presented, according to the following table.

S2.10.  Musical accompanying with special educational services

For the purposes of S2.10, the term ‘musical accompanying with special educational service’ means the provision of musical accompaniment to one or more students or staff in the course of teaching by another member of the academic staff in circumstances where the accompanist deploys educational expertise in repertoire development or expression for student concert or examination purposes, but does not include concert accompanying, vocal coaching or musical directing.

For musical accompanying, the part time (non-fractional) employee will be paid for each hour of accompanying as well as for one hour of preparation time for each hour of accompanying delivered:

For the purposes of this schedule the following definitions apply:

Standard marking is non contemporaneous marking that does not require a significant exercise of academic judgement such as where the marker is able to determine the correct answer by application of a marking template or where general commentary or feedback on a written piece of work is provided.

Complex marking is non contemporaneous marking that does require the significant exercise of academic judgement where for example detailed feedback and comments on complex assignments or examination papers and/or large body of work such as a thesis is required.

All marking other than contemporaneous marking will be paid according to the following table, for all time worked.

The delegate should, if possible, seek to identify the nature and complexity of marking that is required for major pieces of work within their area and how the marking time may be calculated.

S2.13.  Performance sessions – principal players

For the purposes of this Agreement the term ‘conduct performance sessions as a principal player’ means the provision of performance tuition, usually in a one-on-one situation with a performance student in circumstances where the casual/sessional academic staff member is formally designated as a ‘principal player’ by the Head, School of Music.

A casual/sessional academic required to conduct performance sessions as a principal player of a specified duration and the related directly associated non-contact duties in the nature of preparation, reasonably contemporaneous marking and student consultation, will be paid at a rate for each hour of performance session delivered or presented, according to the following table.

All other performance tuition carried out by CSA staff members will be remunerated in accordance with S2.9 (Supplementary/scaffolded form of Delivery) or S2.15 (Other required academic activity).
