Access Cards, Locks & Keys

ANU Security manages building access for staff and students across all ANU sites. For contractors at the ANU, please refer to Contractor Induction

Building Access Cards

All student computer labs, information commons and most buildings on campus have electronic access controls. Most buildings on campus are open from 9 am - 5 pm, but require specified card access afterhours. Secure or high-risk areas (labs, plants and machinery) of the University require card access at all times.

All staff and students are issued cards with standard building access.

Where additional access is required, to secure areas or ANU buildings after-hours, ANU Security can remotely add access to cards.

How to request additional access

Staff are required to provide ANU Security with written confirmation from their area supervisor that card access should be granted to designated facilities.

All requests must be made to ANU Security and include the following:

  • The name of the person requiring access (please include staff/student ID number)
  • The buildings and areas of access required, including building name and building level.
  • Specific doors accurately defined by the name and description (e.g., Faculty of Law Building, Ground Level, Room G17, computer lab entrance)
  • Times of day when access is required.
  • Whether they own a new or modified card.
  • The start and end date for access (or ongoing).
  • Name of their supervisor, an authorised officer.
  • Contact phone number and return email address.

Keys & locks

Doors that are not secured electronically and use traditional locks and keys, are managed by the relevant building custodian. If you are unsure who the building custodian is, contact ANU Security for advice.
