Student Integrity

Student Integrity manages the University's formal process for student misconduct, including sexual misconduct, under the ANU Discipline Rule. The process is victim/survivor led and guided by the principles of procedural fairness. Penalties range from a reprimand to exclusion from the University.

There is no time limit on making a report. It is your decision whether to proceed.

Key Information

The ANU Discipline Rule is informed by the Student Code of Conduct and Sexual Misconduct Policy. Under section 7 of the Discipline Rule, misconduct includes conduct that is:

  1. dishonest, unethical, or otherwise demonstrates a lack of integrity or respect for the safety or wellbeing of other members of the University community; or
  2. unreasonably hinders other members of the University community in the pursuit of their studies, research, or participation in University life; or

Without limiting the above, misconduct also includes:

  • Non-consensual conduct of a sexual nature that a reasonable person would consider an invasion of privacy, indecent, or otherwise unacceptable
  • Harassment, victimisation or discrimination
  • Violent, threatening or intimidating behaviour, or creating a hostile environment
  • Intentionally or recklessly causing risk to another person's health or safety
  • Bribery of a University officer or staff member
  • Intentionally obstructing or disrupting a University activity or proceeding
  • Destroying, damaging, or making unauthorised use of University or another person's property
  • Entering an area of the University without permission
  • Breaching a reasonable direction from a University officer or employee

  • Making a false statement to the University, including providing falsified documents (e.g. medical certificates, academic transcripts)
  • Taking prohibited items into an examination or breaching examination directions
  • Impersonating another person at an examination or assessment

Note: The University can only determine whether misconduct has occurred on the balance of probabilities. It cannot make determinations regarding civil or criminal liability.

Under the Sexual Misconduct Policy, sexual misconduct encompasses any unwelcome behaviour of a sexual nature, including:

  • Sexual assault
  • Sexual harassment
  • Acts of indecency
  • Making or distributing sexually explicit photos or videos without consent
  • Any other non-consensual sexual conduct that a reasonable person would consider an invasion of privacy, indecent, or otherwise unacceptable

The University provides an online Disclosure Form as an avenue for seeking support. Disclosures are managed by the Student Safety and Wellbeing team.

Important: A disclosure is separate to a formal report described here, or a report to Police.

We encourage you to read the full Information for Complainants (PDF) document before submitting a report.

Before submitting, you can also seek advice or support from an independent person familiar with the process, such as:

A Student Misconduct Report template (Word) is available as a guide only. When you submit a report, the assigned case officer may ask:

  • Safety: Are you currently safe from immediate threat or harm? If in immediate danger, call 000.
  • Support: Have you been accessing wellbeing support — for example, from ANU Student Safety and Wellbeing, ANUSA, the Dean of Students Office, the Canberra Rape Crisis Centre, or your GP?
  • Connection to ANU: Did the misconduct occur on ANU premises, during an ANU activity, or via ANU information systems?
  • Prior reporting: Has the misconduct been reported elsewhere — to Police, via the ANU Disclosure Form, or to a student accommodation or academic College?
  • Previous proceedings: Have there been any prior or current proceedings (legal or otherwise) in relation to this misconduct?
  • Steps taken: Have any other steps already been taken to resolve the complaint, such as remediation or mediation?
  • Desired outcome: What action do you want the University to take if misconduct is found? See rule 37 of the Discipline Rule for available actions.
