Coaching for Excellence Masterclass

Provider business unit: People & Culture Division

Course overview

The Australian University context continues to change dramatically and swiftly. This transformation shapes the cultures and roles of all staff. The challenge for senior University leaders and managers is to hold role and manage the tensions between organisational, academic and personal ‘authority’ as they shape and implement shared strategy.

We manage these roles and organisational tensions through day-to-day workplace conversations – talking about what we do. We can call these conversations ‘coaching’. This includes the development of a shared understanding of objectives, issues, timelines, priorities and strategy. This shared planning and organisation however is best achieved in the context of effective working relationships – day-to-day, purposeful, ‘adult-to-adult’ engagement. This is ‘coaching’ – a mutual, task focussed workplace relationship.

Coaching conversations can be difficult – where some issues have been discussed previously but not adequately acknowledged or resolved; where we must deal with changes in task and role; where individuals are disengaged or where we have not developed an effective working or coaching relationship.

These two half-day workshops are intended to further develop the leadership coaching skills of senior academic leaders and to complement the University’s performance and development framework.

This full day workshop (plus half day follow up) will be facilitated by consultant SME, Greg Cook, a psychologist with over 20 years’ experience in leadership development and coaching coupled with extensive experience working with academic leaders across Go8 universities (please see ‘Consultant Resume’ below)

Learning outcomes

The session will provide you with the opportunity to:

  • Identify and discuss the University context and cultures that shape the experience of ‘coaching’ for all involved - including perceptions and experiences of identity, role, authority and purpose in the context of ‘performance development’
  • Summarise and explore a model for academic coaching; the key issues in building an effective workplace relationship and taking up the ‘coaching’ role with staff and colleagues
  • Apply and practice coaching skills to ‘live’ workplace issues

Suitability

This course is designed for Deans, Research School Directors, and Heads of Schools who want to manage and lead their teams through change, as well as drive high performance in an evolving environment.  This workshop provides real-world frameworks and practical tools for leadership coaching; with a particular focus on changing University contexts, workplace conversations,  cultures and role tension plus practice and application of coaching which supervisors can cascade to their direct reports.
