NOTE May 2022 - Increased wait times for committee review
The Ethics office is currently experiencing an unprecedented demand for the review of Human Ethics protocols. The committees are operating at capacity and we therefore recommend submitting your application a minimum of 6 week prior to the anticipated review date.
Applications that meet the preliminary assessment requirements for committee review will be placed in a queue and will be tabled at an upcoming meeting in order of receipt.
To avoid delays in the review process, please ensure that you address the questions in the questions tab carefully (ensuring risks are acknowledged and information is provided regarding how those risks will be mitigated) and upload the required documents (following the guidance on the templates).
NOTE: As of 14 April 2020, all human ethics committees are working hard to keep to our normal schedule of review according to the submission dates below.
Priority may be given to time-sensitive research directly related to COVID-19, or for essential variations to existing protocols that will minimise risk/distress to participants.
In order for these priority submissions to be actioned appropriately, please email human.ethics.officer@anu.edu.au to alert the Ethics Team ahead of submission, and include “Priority Submission” in the subject line.
The submission deadlines for new ethics applications depends on the risk category of the research to be reviewed. (See FAQ “What is the risk level of my research?”).
Full Review research
The Human Research Ethics Committee assesses high-risk applications, research with vulnerable populations, and research involving Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples. They meet on the last Friday of each month (except December). In order for your application to be processed, reviewed, and assessed at this meeting, you must submit and finalise your application before the deadline dates listed.

Expedited, Level 1 research
E1 applications are for low-risk research projects, or research projects which have already undergone ethics review. They are reviewed by the appropriate DERC Chair out of session and can be submitted at any time up until the 15th December of each year. From the 15th December, any new submissions will be considered in the new year.
