Hazardous Materials Management - project update 2018

The Australian National University is committed to safe and responsible management of hazardous materials (Hazmat). Buildings across the Acton and Mt Stromlo campuses are inspected for hazardous materials as required by ANU Hazardous Materials Management Plan and applicable legal and policy requirements, and each building has a register publicly available. The registers can be searched via building number.

Reinspections of 31 buildings on Acton campus

All buildings were reinspected by the end of November 2017.

Scope of the reinspections includes the following buildings: 1, 2, 6, 7, 9, 14, 22, MO27 (A, B & C), 28, 29, 30, 39, 44, 46, 54, 70, 72, 75, 76, 84, 97, 101A, 39A, 61-1, 64A, 67A, 75DGH, 75E, 75F, 75I and 102(Fenner Hall).

The inspections included visual and material sampling in accordance with relevant Australian Standards and Codes.

All of the 31 above buildings have had the reinspections compiled with the current hazardous materials report and their registers updated to reflect findings. The updated report and register have been configured in a new improved format. This included a new addition of an ANU Hazardous Materials Register & an updated ANU Hazardous Materials Maintenance Log of recent works. New reports have been uploaded on to the register website.

Child Care Centres on Acton Campus

The external remediation works on four child care centres on Acton campus (University Preschool Child Care Centre, Heritage Early Childhood Centre, Acton Early Childhood Centre, Cubby House on Campus – Early Learning Centre) are almost completed, with only minor works left to be finalised. All works have been undertaken under the supervision of an independent environmental hygienist engaged by Facilities and Services.

New Full Hazardous Materials Audits on Acton/Mt Stromlo Campus

Four buildings (36, 70, MO11 and 62) have had new full Hazardous Materials Audits completed throughout late 2017/2018 and the new reports have been uploaded on to the website.

A new full Hazardous Materials Audit of Building 58 – Cockcroft is currently underway by an independent Hazardous Materials Inspectors engaged by Facilities and Services.

A new full Hazardous Materials Audit of Building 63 will commence after major remediation works have been completed to ensure the most up-to-date Hazardous Materials Report and Register is available for this building.

All new full Hazardous Materials Audit are completed in accordance with relevant Australian Standards and Codes by experienced independent Hazardous Material Inspectors.

Any remediation works required from any of the new full Hazardous Materials Audits is expected to be commenced in the second half of 2018.

Hazardous Materials Labelling on Acton & Mt Stromlo Campuses

As part of Facilities & Services ongoing commitment to hazardous material management, preventative maintenance works of labelling hazardous materials to non-public areas occurred across more than 30 buildings on the Acton/Mt Stromlo campuses. These works were undertaken in June 2018 and are still continuing.

Hazardous Materials Labelling was completed in accordance with relevant Australian Standards and Codes by an independent Hazardous Materials Inspector in conjunction with Facilities and Services staff.

Remote Campuses

Full Hazardous Materials Audits on 27 buildings in Siding Spring Observatory and on 23 buildings in Kioloa campus were undertaken in March and April 2018.

Updated hazardous materials reports and their registers to reflect findings will be configured in the new improved format and are expected to be progressively uploaded onto the website by August/September 2018.

Any remediation works required and subsequent Hazardous Material labelling is expected to be completed in the second half of this year.
