How to influence policy making in a political world

5 December 2019

More than 70 ANU academics and professional staff participated in an entertaining and informative Policy Masterclass on 7 November.

The Masterclass was the second hosted by the Public Policy and Societal Impact Hub (Hub) in 2019 and brought together an expert panel of experienced policy-makers and academics. ANU Professors Veronica Taylor and Quentin Grafton talked about how they have engaged and influenced policy in Australia and overseas, while Danielle Donegan and Nick Hartland (both former advisers to Government ministers) explained what ministers and their staff look for from academia.

During his presentation, Professor Quentin Grafton provided his 12 personal insights and recommendations of how academics can work better with government to maximise impact and influence.  Some of these recommendations included: Being prepared with your evidence and knowing key people before the opportunity arises to influence; Never compromise your scientific integrity and; know the values of those you wish to influence.  Quentin’s full presentation can be found on here on the PPSIH website.

Director of the Hub, Sean Innis, said that the Masterclass was an important part of the University’s ongoing commitment to making a positive contribution to policy making in Australia and beyond.

“There is no one way for an academic to influence policy”, he says.

“Masterclasses are designed to provide ANU academics with insights they can use in deciding how best they can engage in the policy process”.

The Masterclass also introduced attendees to the Hub’s recently launched Impact Library. This online collection of resources provides insights into the policy making process and how it can be influenced. The growing collection of resources in the Library includes journal articles, opinions, media clips, blog posts and more. These resources come from well-respected voices, from ANU and abroad, and will be updated regularly by the Hub.

In 2020 the Hub will host two further Masterclasses drawing on new experts from the ANU and policymaking communities.
