ANU Wi-Fi

UPDATED: 13 August 2026 

All current ANU students and staff can use ANU Secure or eduroam Wi-Fi networks on campus. 

For ANU Secure, use your ANU ID in the u1234567 format and password. 

To connect to eduroam, use your ANU ID in the 'u1234567@anu.edu.au' format and password. Eduroam can also be used by ANU staff and students when visiting other participating institutions worldwide. 

Please familiarise yourself with the Acceptable Use Policy. It is also strongly recommended that you enable your operating system's firewall and use up-to-date anti-virus software.


Wi-Fi for visitors

Visitors can access eduroam using their own university's username (u1234567@youruni.edu.au) and password.

For conference attendees/guests, please submit an ANU IT Service Desk ticket. For guests staying at ANU residences, please contact reception.


How to connect

Use these connection guides to access both ANU Secure and eduroam using your ANU ID and password. 

Android devices vary and may require different settings based on the Operating System (OS). In general, you can follow these instructions:

For ANU Secure

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Turn on Wi-Fi and select ANU Secure among the available networks.
  3. Enter your ANU ID ('u1234567') and password. Accept any default settings that your device selects. For Pixel phone users, please use username: uds\u1234567
  4. Click on 'Connect'.

For eduroam

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Turn on Wi-Fi and select eduroam.
  3. EAP method: PEAP.
  4. Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPV2.
  5. CA certificate: Trust on first use.
  6. Identity: University ID (e.g. 'u1234567@youruni.edu.au').
  7. Anonymous Identity: Leave blank or 'u1234567'.
  8. Password: University password.
  9. Click on 'Connect'.
  10. Click 'Yes, trust network' if prompted to trust this network.

You should now be connected to ANU Secure/eduroam.

In some cases, the default settings might not work. You may need to enter further details. These vary slightly based on your device’s OS. We have 3 options here, but Option 1 should work for most recent operating systems. 
 

Option 1

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Turn on Wi-Fi.
  3. Select the ANU-Secure/eduroam.
  4. EAP method: PEAP.
  5. Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPV2.
  6. CA certificate: Set to Use system certificates.
  7. Domain (if applicable): anu.edu.au.
  8. Username: University ID (e.g. 'u1234567' for ANU Secure and 'u1234567@youruni.edu.au' for eduroam).
  9. Anonymous identity: Leave Blank.
  10. Password: University password.

Option 2

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Turn on Wi-Fi.
  3. Select the ANU-Secure/eduroam.
  4. Security: WPA2-Enterprise.
  5. Encryption: AES.
  6. EAP Method: Leave Blank or EAP-TTLS.
  7. Inner Method: Leave blank or EAP-GTC.
  8. Username: University ID (e.g. 'u1234567' for ANU Secure and 'u1234567@youruni.edu.au' for eduroam).
  9. CA Certificate: Leave blank or auto-detect.
  10. User Certificate: None.
  11. Password: University password.

Option 3

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Turn on Wi-Fi.
  3. Select the ANU-Secure/eduroam.
  4. EAP method: EAP-TTLS.
  5. Phase 2 authentication: Leave Blank.
  6. CA certificate: Do not Validate.
  7. Domain (if selecting "Use system certificates"): Leave Blank.
  8. Username: University ID (e.g. 'u1234567' for ANU Secure and 'u1234567@youruni.edu.au' for eduroam).
  9. Anonymous identity: Leave Blank.
  10. CA Certificate: Leave blank or auto-detect.
  11. User Certificate: None.
  12. Password: University password.


 

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Turn on Wi-Fi and select ANU Secure/eduroam among the available networks.
  3. Enter your University ID ('u1234567' for ANU Secure and 'u1234567@youruni.edu.au' for eduroam) and password under Account Name and password.
  4. Set Identity to 'None'.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Verify certificate by clicking 'Continue'. Only accept a signed certificate from anuauth8.anu.edu.au through anuauth11.anu.edu.au. 

You should now be connected to ANU Secure/eduroam.

  1. From your desktop, select the Wi-Fi icon at the bottom-right corner of your screen.
  2. Select ANU Secure/eduroam among the available networks.
  3. Accept the certificate by clicking on Connect.
  4. Username: University ID (e.g. 'u1234567' for ANU Secure and 'u1234567@youruni.edu.au' for eduroam).
  5. Password: University password.
  6. Click on OK.

You should now be connected to ANU Secure/eduroam.

  1. Go to Settings and Wi-Fi.
  2. Select ANU Secure/eduroam among the available networks.
  3. Wi-Fi security: WPA & WPA2 Enterprise.
  4. Authentication: Protected EAP (PEAP).
  5. Username: University ID (e.g. 'u1234567' for ANU Secure and 'u1234567@youruni.edu.au' for eduroam).
  6. Password: University password.
  7. Certificate: Leave blank or select No CA certificate is required.
  8. PEAP version: Automatic.
  9. Inner authentication: MSCHAPv2.
  10. Click on 'Connect'.

You should now be connected to ANU Secure/eduroam.

NOTE: We only provide instructions for Ubuntu as the process will be similar for all distributions.

 


Troubleshooting and safety

If you are experiencing issues with Wi-Fi connection, please call ANU IT Service Desk on +61 2 612 54321 or log a ticket.

Please note that after authentication, ANU plays no further role in an eduroam connection. You should refer to your own institution's IT support if you are having difficulties after connecting.

  • Connect to ANU Secure, the University's preferred Wi-Fi network, using your University ID (u1234567) and password.​
  • Access eduroam, enabled for staff, students, and visitors, with your University ID (u1234567@anu.edu.au) and password.
  • Toggle your Wi-Fi off and on again if connection issues persist.​
  • Use only ANU Wi-Fi equipment. Personal routers or boosters can interfere with the building’s network and reduce signal quality. 
  • Avoid using personal hotspots in lecture halls to ensure the best experience.​
  • Update your device regularly. Software updates can enhance performance and fix bugs.​ Beta versionsof an operating system can often have connectivity issues.
  • Avoid large appliances. Using your device near microwaves or similar appliances can disrupt Wi‑Fi signals.
  • Refrain from tampering with wireless access points to prevent connectivity issues and potential damage. Tampering with the access points creates so called network loops, which can make Wi-Fi slower. See the picture below for correct cable use.

The security recommendations are slightly different depending on which wireless service you are connecting to.

Be aware that, in general terms, wireless networks are less secure than wired networks since the electrical signal is not confined to a wire. This can increase the potential for your traffic to be intercepted.

  • Enable your operating system's firewall.
  • Install anti-virus software such as Sophos and keep it up-to-date.
  • Keep your operating system (OS) up-to-date with vendor-provided patches, such as those supplied by Windows Update. Set your OS to automatically patch as they are released.
  • Be wary of running programs or files downloaded from untrusted sources. These can contain invisible programs called trojan horses or viruses.
  • Use common sense when reading unsolicited mail (spam) and do not click on hyperlinks contained in such emails.
  • Use a browser that includes a phishing filter.

Some older Windows devices (such as Windows 8 or 10) may create or connect to ad hoc (computer-to-computer) wireless networks. These networks can present security risks and may interfere with wireless performance. Where possible, disable ad hoc networking and use ANU Secure or eduroam to help maintain a secure and reliable wireless environment.

To check for and remove ad hoc networks:

  1. Open Control Panel and select Network Connections.
  2. Right-click Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
  3. Select the Wireless Networks tab.
  4. Under Wireless Networks, review the list of saved networks. Infrastructure networks are displayed with an antenna icon, while ad hoc (computer-to-computer) networks use a different icon.
  5. Select any ad hoc networks that are no longer required and click Remove. This includes networks named ANU-Access or ANU Access if they are shown as ad hoc networks.

To prevent future ad hoc network connections:

  1. Click Advanced.
  2. Select Access-point (Infrastructure) networks only.
  3. Ensure Automatically connect to non-preferred networks is not selected.
  4. Click Close, then OK to save your changes.

Report suspicious activity

We will never ask you to verify your account by clicking a link in an email. Please treat any such requests with suspicion and report them as soon as possible.
