Welcome note

Welcome to June: I hope you are taking the opportunity to stay cosy inside and write and read. Having said that, we all need to blow the cobwebs away and take a break from the page and screen from time to time. Lately, I have joined Peter Kanowski, Master of University House, on his fortnightly walk and talks which set off from Graduate House on a Monday evening. These walks were originally a ruse to get the occupants of Graduate House out of the studies and into the fresh air but we reckon that all of us could do with an airing now and then. While these walks are coming to an end after 4 June, I very much hope they will resume when Peter returns from overseas commitments later in the winter. Stay tuned for further details.

Mentioning Peter’s important role as Master of University House brings me to a further announcement. He has accepted the role of Deputy Dean (Supervision) and will take up this position from July this year. This will allow us to make swifter progress with our plans for more structured supervisor support and development. We have great supervisors doing an excellent job, and I’d just like to extend congratulations to Associate Professor Salman Durrani from the Research School of Engineering who was recently awarded the VC award for Excellence in Supervision 2018.

On the topic of continuous improvements in HDR support, Stage 2 of the HDR Examinations & Thesis Submission project was released earlier in May. If you are close to submitting your thesis you should be watching the Notification of Intent to Submit Support Videos for further information! The final modules of this project are due for release in August 2018 and we will keep you updated.

Statistical Consulting Unit (SCU) is located in the John Dedman Building (27). The four academic statisticians here can give you free stats advice for your PhD, Masterate or Honours project. We also provide stats support and collaboration for academic staff. If you would like to make an appointment, go to our website for more information. One of the statisticians will then contact you to organise a suitable time. If you are a postgrad, for your first appointment it is good to come with your supervisor. Useful to you too if you can see one of us at the start of your project for stats design advice, rather than waiting until after you have collected your data.

Academic Skills & Learning Centre

Need some advice on writing up your research? Wants some ideas on how to work more efficiently? Through one-to-one appointments a Learning Adviser can work closely with you to develop and improve your writing and writing habits. There are also extensive web resources on the Research Writing website. Additionally, ASLC is currently running writing programs in most of Colleges. Links are provided in the events list above and personal invitations have been sent to candidates with registration passwords included. For more information, contact academicskills@anu.edu.au. If your College or School does not currently have a program – contact ASLC to discuss tailoring a program for you. General workshops for all candidates can be found on their Eventbrite page.

QRN Forum: Qualitative research at the margins: case studies of innovative methods

Are you a PhD student who has tutored at ANU? Learn about new ideas and practices. Are you interested in gaining new skills to improve your effectiveness as a tutor/demonstrator? Principles of Tutoring and Demonstrating (PTD) is an intensive 10 module program, designed to help you develop teaching strategies, apply effective lesson planning principles, offer practical help with marking and examples of how to give feedback to your students. This program is offered during O Week to PhD students who have some tutoring experience. Another PTD program is scheduled for semester 2 and is more practical for those participants new to tutoring. HDR Administration Support Project

The University is committed to identifying improvements for administration and support functions that affect the HDR student experience. Under the direction of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) the ANU Service Improvement Group has a project in progress aiming to identify effective ways of delivering significantly improved HDR Administrative Support outcomes.

Library

The ANU Library has obtained the final two volumes of The Banksias by award-winning botanical artist Celia Rosser, completing the Library’s limited-edition set. Hancock Library will have all three volumes on display throughout June.

Brewers, barmaids and boozers, a new exhibition from the ANU Archives showcasing the history of Tooth & Co. Ltd, a significant NSW brewer, and the many hotels it owned and supplied throughout the state. Items are on display in the Menzies Library foyer until July along with an online exhibition and interactive map.

A free shuttle to the NLA departs on the hour from 10am to 5pm, Monday to Friday from Hancock to the National Library of Australia. Look for the yellow and blue bus near the entrance to Hancock Library.

Chifley, Hancock and Law Library will open at 9am on three Saturdays during the first semester exam period, on 26 May, 2 June and 9 June. Chifley levels 2 & 3 will remain open 24 hours. All branch opening hours are on the Library website.
