HDR Update

November 2019

In this issue

  • Academic Writing Month (AcWriMo)
  • Development opportunities for HDR candidates
  • Scholarships and Programs
  • Roll of Honour
  • News from around ANU

Welcome note

Happy November. While Spring is a fitting time to take a fresh approach, the changes in the HDR Update you’ll see are actually in response to your feedback. This edition is shorter than previous versions, and has a focus on upcoming events and activities as well as scholarships and opportunities available in the next few months. We have done away with a lot of the general reminders but you’ll also see that our service units are all listed (with hyperlinks) at the end of the Update.

I will continue to use my welcome to highlight HDR news so firstly congratulations to Lithin Louis, who took second place in the 2019 Asia-Pacific 3MT final. It was a good reward for a lot of hard work, and a great outcome for Lithin (and really for all our 3MT participants).

I’m pleased to welcome Associate Professor Alice Richardson as our new Director, Statistical Consulting Unit (SCU). Alice is a biostatistician who has been working at ANU in the Research School of Population Health. If you are not familiar with the work of SCU you can of course find more information by following the link in this Update.

Lastly, I’m also pleased to tell you that by the time you read this the new HDR supervision development webpages will be available. These pages support best practice in HDR supervision at ANU to support you in your research program.

Academic Writing Month (AcWriMo)

Time to Write: November is Academic Writing Month (AcWriMo)

Need to get some writing done before the end of the year? It’s not too late to join AcWriMo in November! Join the RST community in person and online for a festival of writing, set your writing goals and have some company along the way.

Why do it?
Writing always seems to take longer than we expect, and for lots of us it’s really very hard work – so we procrastinate and procrastinate… Breaking through your usual barriers and establishing the habit of writing is very motivating. AcWriMo will kickstart your writing and provide a community to help you succeed.

How does it work?
Sign up via this Google Form. There you’ll find a link to the register to add your details (name and writing goals). You decide how many words you are going to write each day, or how many hours you will devote to writing each day. Aim high, but within reach. At the end of each day enter your output for the day; at the end of each week, tally the results and brag about your total.

We’ve also scheduled a series of writing events for AcWriMo participants during November – online writing groups, writing sessions in our seminar room (20 & 27 Nov), a blog for conversation, and workshops on fixing your writing trouble and working with the literature. Links and further details will be made available when you register.

If you have any questions, please contact Cally Guerin or Research Training.

Research Integrity Exam

All HDR candidates must complete a research integrity training milestone exam early in their candidature. The milestone exam is supported by a Wattle site which explains the principles and practice of research integrity at ANU, more information can be found here.

A new National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research was released in 2018. The Wattle site has been updated to reflect these changes and a new Research Integrity Milestone exam has been updated in the eForms. The exam still offers you two chances to pass. If you have any questions or concerns about the new exam, please contact the Director of Research Training: inger.mewburn@anu.edu.au.

Library

Digital literacy training concludes for 2019 at the end of November. However, a range of research and learning support resources are available on the Library website. Urgent assistance can be arranged via email or at 6125 8886.

Postgraduate & Research Students' Association (PARSA)

Want to avoid the distractions, get out of your office, and get more effective writing done? PARSA Shut Up and Write sessions are running in November and December. These sessions focus on short, intense bursts of productive writing in a supportive environment, using the Pomodoro technique. Sessions run across 5-days a week with healthy meals and trained facilitators. For the schedule and registrations visit this link.
