HDR Update

December 2018 and January 2019

In this issue

  • News & Events
  • Opportunities for HDR students
  • Roll of Honour

Welcome note

I hope that the end of this year brings an opportunity to relax, reflect a little on your achievements, and ready yourselves for the year ahead. We have progressed a great deal this year with the shaping of the Graduate Research Office (GRO), delivery of the exams and thesis submission project, greater integration of services for HDR students, the increasing focus on developing and supporting our supervisors and the launch of the Green Paper. We will continue to see changes to HDR at ANU in the New Year (watch out in particular for further announcements about the GRO), but until then I hope you factor in a well-earned rest.

December is also a time of celebration, as we draw closer to Graduation season once again. Congratulations to all of you who finished this year: I will be at many of the ceremonies, and look forward to seeing you cross the stage.

A last reminder about the Yale 2019-20 Fox International Fellowship; applications close on December 14th 2018. You can always contact my office for more information.

I wish you all a great holiday and will be thinking fondly of a baking hot Canberra as I return to chilly England for a Christmas family reunion. Next year is going to be even more exciting and I look forward to catching up with you then.

ANU Press

New this month from the ANU Press:

The Bounty from the Beach: cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary essays>– this collection of essays ranges far and wide across disciplines, methodologies and scholarly styles. It aims to reorient the focus of the Bounty story away from the West, where most Bounty narratives and studies have emerged, to the Pacific, where most of the original events unfolded. It also explores the works of some renowned Western writers and actors who have put the spotlight on characters who were silenced on account of race, class or geographical distance from the dominant centres of power.

The Archaeology of Sulawesi: Current Research on the Pleistocene to the Historic Period– this volume of Terra Australis is the first to be devoted entirely to the archaeology of the central Indonesian island of Sulawesi, which contains some of the oldest directly dated rock art in the world, and some of the oldest evidence for a hominin presence. This volume sees scholars from Indonesia and Australia come together to present their research findings and views on a broad range of topics, and it lays down a baseline for significant future research.

All titles can be purchase or download for free from the ANU Press website.
