Welcome note

Greetings from Cairns. I am here for the biannual Deans of Graduate Research meeting, where Australian and New Zealand Deans of HDR gather to discuss the hot topics of the day – both national and international. Issues include updates on national research training funding, industry internships, good practice in Indigenous research training, international benchmarking, and skills development within institutions. It is a genuinely collegial community of academics which foregrounds the interests of higher degree research students and the supervisory community, and I look forward to catching up with what is happening in the sector at large. I will update the Student Consultative Committee at our next meeting.

As the nights draw in, and we enjoy the beautiful colours of a Canberra autumn, it’s a good time to ensure you spend a little bit of your week checking the opportunities available to you within and beyond ANU. If you are keen to explore broader challenges, here are two exciting opportunities. So make yourself a cup of tea, take ten minutes away from your research, and click on the relevant links below. Who knows where that virtual journey may take you?

Australia Awards- Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowship 2018 Round now opened - the program provides opportunities for Australian postgraduate students, and postdoctoral researchers to undertake international research and professional development in an eligible country overseas. Potential applicants should read the Application Guidelines and the FAQs section of the Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships website. Should an applicant have further questions, they may email the Endeavour inbox directly on endeavour@education.gov.au

Applications for the Australian-French Entrepreneurship Challenge are now open. The event sees participants organised into teams who then have 24 hours to develop a proposal, after which they pitch their ideas to a judging panel. The event runs from Tuesday 11 July to Wednesday 12 July and this year is in Adelaide. Applications close 9 am (AEST) Monday 8 May 2017, and must be submitted electronically (including supporting documentation), by a research office or grants office or equivalent, to grants@science.org.au, and can be made through the appropriate College Research Office.

Falling Walls Lab Australia calls for talented researchers and professionals to showcase their most innovative ideas. Falling Walls Lab Australia will take place on 12 September 2017, at the Shine Dome in Canberra, hosted by the Australian Academy of Science supported by the German Embassy in Canberra.

Throughout your research project you might find it very helpful to have an appointment with a Learning Adviser from the Academic Skills and Learning Centre. To find out more or make an appointment check the Appointments website.

An exhibition opening in May will showcase selected artworks from the Elizabeth Durack Clancy collection, which have never before been on display. The artworks convey Elizabeth’s first impressions of the women of Papua and New Guinea in 1968.

Statistical Consulting Centre

The Statistical Consulting Centre is in the John Dedman Building (27). There are four academic statisticians offering free stats advice for your PhD, Masterate or Honours project. The ASLC offers face to face, one to one appointments for research students, they also have extensive self-access online resources on their Research Writing website. Additionally, workshops can be arranged for groups of students on a number of topics (PDF, 661KB), including thesis writing, time management and presentations. ANU Online Wattle, Turnitin & Echo360 training

If you are teaching now or in the near future, ANU Online offers training on Wattle (Moodle), Turnitin, Echo360, and using technology for teaching and learning. You can come to one of the face-to-face sessions, get personal assistance at a drop-in session, learn at your own pace with Wattle Basics online train ing, or join the conversation about education technology with a coffee course.
