Welcome note
It seems rather belated to wish you all a happy new year, but this is the first digest of the year and it seems wrong not to open with good wishes, and signal that for many of us this is the time for new habits or renewed good intentions. I hope that if you made resolutions you are enjoying keeping them and if, like me, you have had a break, you now feel restored and revitalised. If you have soldiered on through the break I hope this quieter time of year was productive for you. A special welcome to all of you recently enrolled on your higher degree research program: make sure you check in to the Research Digest on a monthly basis to keep abreast of current events in the HDR calendar Now that I have been Dean for a year I seem to be acquiring more resolutions and ambitions by the month. I know 2018 will be another interesting year and my current wishlist includes improving on the gains we have made to HDR administration, better support and guidance for HDR supervisors, and, above all, an improved experience for you, wherever you are in the research journey. While the year is still new you might want to think about some of the broader opportunities available for HDR students. Just before the Christmas break applications for the Yale 2018-19 Fox International Fellowship opened, and there is still a little time left to apply if you fancy spending the academic year at Yale. You can find more information here, applications are due by 13 February 2018. A little closer to home is the Go8 and Westpac STEM PhD Program, which is being offered for only the second time. Successful PhD students will have a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics and will be offered part-time employment with the Westpac Group in Sydney during their studies. The full time equivalent salary is $100,000 (an annual base salary of $60,000 p.a. for three days per week). Applications open 1 February and close 22 February 2018. If you are interested, you will need to establish that you can be a part-time employee of Westpac Group concurrent with your PhD candidature at ANU.
