Welcome to the last edition of Research Digest for the year. We have welcomed around 500 new commencing HDR students to campus this year and by the end of the year around 380 students will have submitted their theses – congratulations to all!
2017 Global Youth Science Summit (GYSS)
Congratulations to our ANU nominees (both HDR students and Early Career Researchers) to the 2017 GYSS. All five of our nominees were successful and will travel to Singapore in January 2017 to take part in the summit. GYSS is organised by the National Research Foundation Singapore and brings together distinguished scientists, post-graduates and academics for five days of learning and mentoring."
2017 promises to be an exciting year ahead with the arrival of Professor Imelda Whelehan as the new Dean, Higher Degree Research in January. She is keen to meet with you all and will be attending a range of events early in the year to hear from you all directly regarding your experience at ANU and to get your input into shaping the PhD experience at ANU. Major changes in Government policy mean that from 2017 Universities will have much greater flexibility in how we offer scholarships support and research training support for students. This includes consideration of the support and training we provide to ensure HDR students are well regarded and competitive for a diverse range of career pathways. More information and opportunities for students to be involved in these discussions will be provided early next year.
May I take this opportunity to wish all our HDR students, friends and families a safe and happy holiday break. Please take the time to relax and recharge the batteries before continuing on your PhD journey next year.

SUPPORT FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS (ACT)
The ACT Government will introduce free, automatic, streamlined nomination of skilled migrant visa applications for PhD graduates from Canberra institution: subject to meeting Commonwealth requirements, any international student awarded a PhD by a Canberra university will automatically be nominated to live and work in Canberra.
INNOVATION ANU First Wednesday Connect, CBRIN hosts an entrepreneurs networking event on the first Wednesday of every month. Connect to the vibrant community of innovators, entrepreneurs and business people. Lean Startup Workshops, these half-day workshops help you to apply lean startup methodology to your research projects: Customer Validation, 9 November; Business Model Generation, 23 November; and Product Development 7 December.
