March 2021

Welcome to March.

We are now well into the year and the campus is buzzing with activity. While we are not at full capacity there is certainly a lot more life on campus than we have seen for a year.

We recently celebrated our graduating colleagues with a Grand Graduation that included satellite events around Australia and in China. And we have started the academic year with the Vice Chancellor State of the University address. In it the VC spoke of the need for universities to find solutions to the challenges we are facing now as a country and globally.

The university is continuing the ANU Recovery process. The Research and Innovation portfolio has released a change proposal for consultation that you can view here. In it is a proposal to disestablish the Statistical Consulting Unit. If you would like to provide feedback on the plan you can contact PARSA or org.change@anu.edu.au.

From chaos to calm: document writing bootcamp

image

You’ve done a whole lot of writing during candidature – now it’s time to bang it into shape. If it feels like you’ve produced a loose, baggy thesis monster, we can help you tame it.

This boot camp will help you understand a range of editing techniques that can be applied to various levels of document editing, from the overall structure of your thesis through to sentence-level details. By the end of this boot camp you will be able to produce a tidy, coherent document that promotes clear communication and meets examiner and reviewer expectations. Your inner perfectionist finally gets a chance to shine (for a little while, at least!).

This boot camp is suitable for late-stage candidates. Participants will work on their own documents and will need to bring an extended piece of writing for the activities (2 chapters or articles at a minimum).

The format will be a three-day Zoom meeting, strictly limited to 40 people from The Australian National University. This opportunity is available to ANU HDRs.

Registration: April 19, 20, 21

NECTAR – Network for Early Career Academics

Did you know that ANU has a Network for early-career academics? NECTAR offers professional development opportunities which are most relevant to late-stage PhD candidates but all HDR candidates are welcome at NECTAR events. NECTAR events are also a fantastic opportunity to meet peers from other areas at ANU in a friendly, supportive and safe environment. You can find out more about NECTAR at nectar.anu.edu.au, or subscribe to the NECTAR mailing list here and get regular updates about upcoming workshops straight into your mailbox.

How not to break the law during your PhD (copyright)

Theses often include previously published material in support of their work. To legally include this material HDR students need to know how to manage 3rd Party Copyright in their thesis. This session will show you how to do this, so you can freely share your work with no threat of legal repercussions.

Register: 18 March, 2-3pm

Canberra Innovation Network: Research to Impact Webinar

Research to Impact is a webinar for researchers to introduce practical tools that help you take your research out of academia, engage with industry and find new opportunities.

From the Thesis Whisperer

First 'On the Reg' podcast for the year, where Dr Jason Downs and I talk about productivity:

I'm really enjoying reading 'First you write a sentence' - here's a review.

I've been playing around with the Bullet Journal method and to my surprise, I like it! I'll develop a workshop, but here's the basic gist.
