Welcome note

It is March and the campus is buzzing with students again. I am only six weeks in to my term as Dean of Higher Degree Research and I have already met a number of you. I have been fortunate enough to attend the first induction event, the PARSA welcome evening, a University House Wednesday dinner and the Commencement cocktails for Toad Hall. Last week we had our first Student Consultative Committee where we discussed the University’s new Strategic Plan and our plans to ensure that higher degree research candidates feel that their voices are being heard and that their contribution to the University is recognised. Each College has representatives on this committee, so do seek them out and let them know if there are issues you would like them to raise.

Congratulations to students Mr Simon McKenzie, Mr Henry Orton, and Ms Toby Hendy, who have been successful in the prestigious 2017 Westpac Future Leaders Scholarships round. The scholarships focus on technology and innovation, strengthening Australia-Asia ties and enabling social change. Simon and Henry have already started at ANU, while Toby will start in the second half of the year.

Applications have now closed for the 2017-18 Fox International Fellowship (at Yale) and we welcome our first Yale Fox International fellow, Eugenio Gómez-Chico, who is working with the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet).

Last weekend 24 students wrote 283,293 words during the first Thesis Boot Camp for the year, the next camp is in April. I encourage you to apply for the many opportunities available to you this month, the upcoming programs are listed below.

Opportunities

The Statistical Consulting Centre is in the John Dedman Building (27). The four academic statisticians here can give you free stats advice for your PhD, Masterate or Honours project. We also provide stats support and collaboration for academic staff. If you would like to make an appointment, go to our website for more information. One of the statisticians will then contact you to organise a suitable time. If you are a postgrad, for your first appointment it is good to come with your supervisor. Useful to you too if you can see one of us at the start of your project for stats design advice, rather than waiting until after you have collected your data.

Individual researchers in Australian universities have a legal obligation to consider whether they may require a permit from the Commonwealth Defence Export Controls Office to physically export or electronically transfer regulated goods, software and technology or ‘know how’ outside Australia’s borders. The Research Services seminars are targeted towards researchers, join us on Wednesday 3rd May 2017 10–11am, register on Eventbrite.

ANU Online Wattle, Turnitin & Echo360 training

If you are teaching now or in the near future, ANU Online offers training on Wattle (Moodle), Turnitin, Echo360, and using technology for teaching and learning. You can come to one of the face-to-face sessions, get personal assistance at a drop-in session, learn at your own pace with Wattle Basics online train ing, or join the conversation about education technology with a coffee course.
