Invention disclosure

What is an invention disclosure?

To begin the commercialisation process, you will first need to disclose your innovation to the Technology Transfer Office. A member from our team will then get in touch with you to get a better understanding of your project and to gather the information necessary to evaluate the commercial potential of your innovation.

Researchers can disclose their invention with TTO by completing the Innovation Opportunity Contact Form.

When should I inform the TTO of my project?

If you think you have an idea that may have commercial potential, get in touch with the Technology Transfer Office as soon as possible. It is important that you let the TTO know of your idea well before you publicly disclose your work, as doing so prematurely will affect your ability to apply for patent protection on your invention. This means holding off on publishing your report, speaking at conferences or public forums and meeting with companies. Disclosing your invention as early as possible will give you the best chance at successfully commercialising your invention and you will still be able to publicly discuss your work after the intellectual property is protected.

Even if you are not sure about disclosing your invention, we would still encourage you to complete the Innovation Opportunity Contact Form so we are able to provide you with advice on the best way to proceed.

How does the TTO evaluate my invention?

The TTO will consider your idea in relation to the existing market, including potential competitors, customers and partners, and explore possible routes to market. The TTO will also undertake some preliminary patent searches to determine if your idea is patentable.
