In early May, the University committed to undertake an independent review of student residences in response to one of the recommendations of the Human Rights Commission report released on 1 August 2017. The Nous Group was commissioned to undertake the review.
The review looked into the factors which contribute to sexual assault and sexual harassment in student residences on the ANU campus. It found there is a strong and positive culture in most residential halls and most students have a high level of satisfaction with residential life.
The review also identified some areas of improvement in University policies and procedures. ANU has committed to address all 12 recommendations from the review to ensure our residential halls are as safe and inclusive as possible.
Most of the work required to address the recommendations of the Nous review is already underway with the establishment of the Respectful Relationships Unit and other activities undertaken in the past 12 months.
Some recommendations will take time to come into full effect as we improve bystander training and enhance pastoral support within in the halls. The University is committed to taking all the necessary steps to ensure our campus is safe, and our students feel safe.
The Respectful Relationships team would like to thank the staff and students who participated in the audit.
