Universities have dramatically improved their capacity for student engagement, performance management, feedback, participative planning and communication. Yet these approaches often do not deal with all staffing issues.
Sometimes staff, colleagues and supervisors have very difficult, ongoing patterns of behaviour. They may be reasonable, competent and responsible at times, and get along with people – but there may be a history of difficulty in other areas and of consistently making others very unhappy.
Increasingly, we recognise that we have a responsibility to support the staff who must deal with this difficult behaviour on a day-to-day basis and to change how we support these staff to directly manage the difficult behaviour.
These two one-day workshops provide opportunity for development of a shared understanding and approach to management of very difficult behaviour within the University and in partnership with Human Resources. The second workshop will review delegate’s case examples, developing detailed management strategies from the first workshop. Attendance at the first workshop is therefore a pre requisite for the second workshop.
Workshop 1 - Managing Very Difficult Workplace Behaviour LPHR09
- Review the impact of very difficult behaviour
- Identify common characteristics of very difficult workplace behaviour
- Describe and prepare strategies for managing different types of behaviour
- Discuss the common internal and personal challenges that difficult behaviour creates for the supervisor and the organisation as a whole – identifying general and HR management strategies for guidance and support
Workshop 2 - Managing Very Difficult Workplace Behaviour Masterclass LPHR14
- Review delegate’s case examples, developing detailed management strategies
- Review the first workshop and the impact, characteristics and types of very difficult behaviour
- Discuss the organisational context/psycho-social system, risk and protective factors for very difficult workplace behaviours and how it is managed tolerated, allowed or ignored
- Discuss Industrial Relations and Human Resource requirements and their application as enablers or constraints
- Understand, define and manage difficult behaviour
- Confidently implement a range of leadership approaches and techniques for dealing with specific behaviours in the workplace
Both training workshops will be facilitated by external consultant Greg Cook, a psychologist with over 20 years’ experience in leadership development and coaching coupled with extensive experience working with senior leaders across Go8 universities.
$300 per participant per workshop
The following charges will apply for non-attendance at a workshop with cost unless the registrant nominates a colleague (who meets the eligibility criteria for the course) to attend in their place.
- 100% charge: Notification of cancellation received within 0–5 working days of the workshop date will incur a charge equivalent to 100% of course fees
- 50% charge: Notification of cancellation received within 6–10 working days of the workshop date will incur a charge equivalent to 50% of course fees
Please note that non-attendance due to illness or caring responsibilities will require reasonable evidence to waive the non-attendance fee.
