Participant Information Sheet
ANU aims to continuously improve programs and activities run for the benefit of students. To assist in this process, we are asking students who are new to the ANU community in Semester 2, 2019 to complete a short survey regarding their experience around Orientation Week and the overall transition process.
Last run in 2017, this survey has been utilised to review the structure and program of Orientation Week, as well as the overall transition process for new students. The following improvements were implemented based on student feedback in 2017:
- creation of an online induction module, ANU1001;
- refining of the welcome/on-boarding emails for new students;
- introduction of key pre-arrival communication, including webinars for key cohorts;
- removal of the lengthy induction sessions; and
- lengthening of the transition support for new students with an expansion of the SET4ANU Mentoring Program.
The University further noted the need to research potential longitudinal benefits of engagement with transition activities. It was agreed that the information gained via this survey could assist both the continuous improvement aims of the University, and also support the research into the potential long term impacts of early engagement.
Benefits to participants
Participants in this project will have the opportunity to provide insight into the highlights and key areas for improvement in regards to student transition and orientation at ANU. An improved transition period will lead to more engaged students and a stronger ANU community, of which participants are a part.
Risks to participants
The survey uses non-invasive questions to ask participants about their engagement in, and experiences of, various orientation and transition activities. The risk to participants is assessed as very low.
This survey has been developed by the Engagement and Success team, in consultation with Planning and Service Performance. This exercise is sponsored by Professor Tony Foley, (Interim) Pro Vice-Chancellor (University Experience).
There are no agencies external to the ANU involved in the conduct of this project, and this activity does not form the basis of academic research.
You have been sent an individual link to this survey. This link is unique to you, and means that your responses can be attached to this unique link. All responses will be confidential and will remain confidential, so far as the law allows. Raw data will be stored securely and access will be restricted to the Planning and Service Performance Division at ANU. For the purposes of better understanding how orientation relates to transition to later University life, future analyses may see your responses to this survey linked to other administrative information you have provided to the university, other student records, and responses you provide to other surveys which, as an ANU student, you may be asked to participate in the future. In all circumstances, appropriate steps will be taken to ensure that individual participants are not identified in any subsequent reporting (e.g. qualitative responses will be de-identified where necessary, quantitative reporting will be suppressed for subgroups with a sample of five people or less).

Gift Card Prize Draw Terms and Conditions
1. Entry is open to all respondents of the Orientation and Transition survey. All entrants must have responded to the survey online.
2. The entry period for inclusion in the Prize Draw is from 12:01 am AEST Monday 5 August 2019 until 11:59 pm AEST Monday 19 August 2019.
3. Prizes are three (3) gift cards, each valued at $100 (total prize pool $300).
4. Winners will be identified through a random computer generated draw to be conducted at the Australian National University on Wednesday, 25 September 2019. Winners will be notified by email within 7 days of the draw.
5. If any prizes are unclaimed by 25 October 2019, an unclaimed prize draw will take place at the Australian National University on Monday 28 October 2019. New winners will be notified by email within 7 days of the redraw.
