ANU has long held a reputation for being a first class institution that is highly regarded by its academic peers around the world. Great universities achieve that status because of the quality and performance of their staff. This reputation in turn attracts the most gifted students.
ANU has an obligation to assist its academic staff to perform at the highest level in their research, teaching, service, administration and public policy activities. It is clear from discussions with staff, unions and surveys that academic staff want and expect developmental processes to assist them to achieve at the highest level.
The Statement of Academic Activity (SAA) is one of many tools designed to facilitate and recognise the achievements of our most important resource, our staff. The statement will be used to reflect on an individual's activity, to plan their professional development and to ensure that the institution's data is complete and accurate to make informed decisions.
A critical element of any professional development activity is meaningful, two-way engagement that is supportive, transparent and objective between a staff member and their supervisor. The SAA is a useful tool to assist as a conversation starter regarding achievements and progress.
A key purpose of the first release of the statement is to validate and improve the base level data collected in University enterprise systems. The Office of the Vice-Chancellor in conjunction with Planning and Performance Measurement Division and key Service Divisions have developed a set of self-service reports to be made available through ANU Insight in order to support the validation and clean-up of administrative records within the University and the ongoing usefulness of the SAA.
About the reports
The data in the SAA and associated reports is extracted from several administrative systems across the university. More information about the data sources and contents of the statement can be found in the 'SAA - Report inclusions, sources and methodologies' document found in the Reference documents section on this webpage.
There are currently five types of reports available for users to run. These reports are accessible by different groups, these being academics (existing ANU academic staff), college and central administrators and relevant college executive.
Statement of academic activity
This is a one page summary report incorporating information across a range of academic activities for an individual for the reporting period (e.g. 2009-2016). This report links to five drill-through or detailed reports that provide an academic with the ability to propose modifications and additions to their records;
- Publications detail - provides detailed information of an individual's published works for their academic career with ANU.
- Awarded funding detail - provides detailed information of an individual's grant applications including successful and unsuccessful submissions covering 2008 to the current period.
- HDR supervision detail - provides detailed information about the HDR students and the support roles the academic contributed to over time.
- Education detail - provides detailed information about the courses an academic contributes to along with the role, headcount and Student Experience of Learning Support (SELS) of that course.
- Service and other detail - a report that provides an academic with the ability to list all of their service and other significant contributions to the university and broader industry and community. An interactive report that allows college administrators to identify the proposed additions and modifications requested by academics for the relevant data set and administrative area. It provides professional staff with the ability to flag the processing status of requests and provide comments to academic staff about the progress of their modifications and/or additions.

This report is linked to an academic's profile. It provides a summary an individual's proposed modifications and/or additions. It also provides an academic with the ability to track the processing status of proposed modifications and/or additions.
Academic access and status report
This report provides academic managers with visibility over the progress of academics in accessing their SAA.
Tracking summary report
This report provides managers and academic managers with a high level summary of SAA access.
Obtaining access to the reports
Access to the SAA report has been pre-approved for all academic staff members and their supervisors. Several groups of professional and service division staff have also been approved as nominated.
If you are a new Dean, Head of School or General Manager please fill out the ANU Insight user access request form. Once it is complete you can send it back to the ANU Insight Service Desk via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by internal mail.
If you are an administrator seeking access to the data reconciliation report and have not been pre-approved, please fill out the ANU Insight user access request form. Once it is complete you can send it back to the ANU Insight Service Desk via email at email@example.com or by internal mail.
Administrators will only be able to request access to their relevant data set and to their division, school or college. For example, HR practitioners will only be able to review modifications and additions to HR information for their identified department. Publication Collection Officers (PCOs) will only be able to review modifications and additions to publication information for their identified department and so on.

Feedback and suggestions
The statement of academic activity is in its phase one release. The purpose of this is to support the improvement of the base data utilised in the statement. Aligned with the data validation process, feedback will be sought from academic staff and their supervisors for future enhancements. This feedback will be collated and provided to the Vice-Chancellor's working party for review and incorporation into future phases of the statement of academic activity release.
