The following frequently asked questions may assist you for your teaching in the Marie Ray and Culture & Events Buildings in Kambri.

Recordings

 

1. Can I use my own computer and connect to the projector to be recorded?

  • Yes, there is a retractable HDMI cable embedded in the table.
  • Or you can use the wireless presenter.
    • Download the AirMedia Crestron app for mobile devices or download the software on your computer (Mac or PC).
    • The code for the room is projected on the screen, and is generated anew each time
    • Be aware that students can “take over” the presentation – this can be great for students to share their work.
  • What if I have a Mac?
    • You might need a Mac lightning or USB-C to HDMI adapter.
    • Note: Many newer Apple products have built-in copyright protection (High-bandwidth Digital Copyright Protection/HDCP). Please see question 2 below for details.

 

2. How does HDCP affect my recording? If I play DVD in class, can the DVD content get captured in the Echovideo lecture recording?

High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) is used to protect the rights of the companies that make content.

  • All equipment in Kambri now has HDCP embedded by their manufacturers.
  • This works to prevent copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across connections especially when equipment detects a recording device (Echovideo) on the network.
  • Individual pieces of equipment i.e. PCs, Macs, projectors etc. also do compliance checking which is why the HDCP works so well at protecting content.
  • Kambri having the newest AV equipment throughout the University, has the strongest HDCP protection applied, by default.

Unprotected video and unprotected streaming media runs and records in Kambri; protected content will not run and record due to High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) built into the system. As such it is recommended that staff check their content in the lecture theatres before their scheduled class.

Please note that further advice is being sought from the ANU Legal department on HDCP.

 

3. How do I know if the recording is happening based on the recording light?

Red: Recording is being CAPTURED

Blinking Red: Recording is PAUSED

Green: Recording is STOP/END or the recording device is IDLE

Please ensure the wireless/lapel microphone is turned on and wear the microphone so the audio can be captured in the recording.

 

Microphones

 

4. Do I have to use the wireless/lapel microphone for the lecture recording?

Yes, you need to use the wireless/lapel microphone to capture the audio in the lecture recordings, because Kambri venues do not have lectern microphones to automatically record the audio.

 

5. Why can I only use one microphone at a time in the classroom?

As there is only one audio channel designed into the AV setup, a second microphone can be used only when the other microphone is switched off.

 

6. Why is there static noise in the microphone and also in the recording?

This was related to a network issue but it has been resolved.

 

Equipment

 

7. Why does Air Media disconnect during a lecture?

When a computer power saver or screen saver activates during a lecture it will disconnect the Air Media connection. It is best to leave power and screen savers switched off because if Air Media is disconnected, the lecturer/presenter will need to log in again.

 

8. Are there document cameras?

No, these rooms do not have document cameras at the moment. There is a working party established to investigate.

 

9. What is the best way to project/capture writing that would normally be done on a document camera?

It is recommended to use a tablet and stylus (ie: iPad and Apple Pen), and have them connected to the HDMI cable using an adapter or using the wireless presenter.

 

10. Are there DVD players?

There are no DVD players in these spaces. If you have a DVD that you need to show:

  1. Look for a legal online/streaming alternative of the content
  2. Speak to the Library about your options for sourcing the video content online – they can help find alternative formats or source difficult-to-find content
  3. Check with Timetabling for a different room. There are other rooms on campus with DVD players.
  4. Submit a ticket to IT Service Desk for the AV team and ask for advice.
