To assist in the improved efficiency of administration and ethical review, The Australian National University introduced an on-line application form in The Australian National University Research Information Enterprise System (ARIES). The three-level ethical risk classification streamlines the ethical review of low-risk protocols by simplifying the preparation and ethical review of protocols.
- Low-risk protocols E1 (Expedited Level 1 - E1) engage participants only in activities that they would encounter in normal everyday life
- Low-risk protocols E2 (Expedited Level 2 - E2) engage participants who are fully competent and not vulnerable in research settings that are relatively benign - not what the participants would encounter in everyday life
- High-risk protocols (Full review - FULL) engage participants who are in some way vulnerable, or research settings that are particularly unusual or uncomfortable.
