A Christmas puzzle from the Statistical Consulting Unit The staff at the Statistical Consulting Centre wish you all a much-better-than-average holiday season and a significant New Year. You have asked us many interesting statistical questions this year, and we wanted to reverse roles and leave you with something to ponder while relaxing. So here is this year's Chrismas puzzle. Sleeping Beauty volunteers for the following experiment. She is told all of the following details. On Sunday she is put to sleep. A fair coin is then tossed to decide which experimental procedure is undertaken. If the coin comes up heads, Sleeping Beauty is woken and interviewed on Monday, and then the experiment ends. If the coin comes up tails, she is woken and interviewed on Monday and Tuesday. But when she is put to sleep again on Monday, she is given a dose of an amnesia-inducing drug that ensures she cannot remember her previous awakening. In this case, the experiment ends after she is interviewed on Tuesday. Any time Sleeping Beauty is awakened and interviewed, she is asked, 'What is your credence now for the proposition that the coin landed heads?' Is the answer one half or one third? Alumni access! For the first time ANU Alumni can now access over 650 ANU Press books, 9,000 journal articles, conference papers and other ANU research outputs, and more than 15 major international collections of scholarly books and journals. Visit the new webpage. Summer opening hours have commenced across the Library branches. Please check the opening hours page for the new hours. Don't forget Chifley Library Level 2 is open 24x7 on all days that the University is open. Library training has concluded for the year, however resources are available on the Library website, and urgent assistance can be arranged via email or by calling 6125 8886. Registrations for 2016 workshops will open in mid-December. Taiwanese Resource Centre for Chinese Studies The Taiwan Resource Centre for Chinese Studies (TRCCS) was officially opened on 30 November. The Centre includes over 1,000 scholarly resources primarily in the fields of history, religion, culture, literature, society and politics, as well as cross-strait relations. Read more. University and ANU Library Christmas and new year closure The University, including all Library branches and the 24-hour Level 2 in Chifley Library, will close at noon on Thursday 24 December and re-open at 9am on Monday 4 January 2016.
