Types of mentoring:
Academic

I believe mentoring is important because it provides space to reflect on your career and contemplate options, and offers different perspectives of the wider picture. Good mentoring is non-judgmental, honest and supportive, peppered with enthusiasm and good humour.

After extensive experience of not being mentored, I now know what I missed and how it affected my career. Having experienced burnout, I recognise some of the problems people face. I have worked in and out of academia. At ANU, I have participated in and organised group mentoring programs for women ECRs, and have mentored individuals. I have been through the ANU promotions process more than once, and sat on the University Promotions Committee. My experience and outlook are international, striving for high standards and excellence while helping others to achieve.
