With a decade of professional experience in international affairs, Helena has been at the Australian National University since September 2016. After working in the College of Asia & the Pacific, she moved to International Strategy & Partnerships.
Prior to joining the University, Helena was in the international aid & cooperation sector. This included roles as electoral officer and democratic governance officer in the United Nations Peacekeeping mission in Timor-Leste, as international advisor to government (Ministry of Health) and the national oil company.
Helena has a keen interest in democratic processes and participated in electoral observation missions in Africa. Before that, she was an advisor in the office of the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs in Portugal. Helena also worked in an international consultancy company in Spain and her first job was as junior researcher in an international relations and security institute.
Helena holds a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations and a Master of International Relations, Diplomacy and Cooperation from the University of Lisbon. She participated in the European Erasmus Program, with a year taken in the University of Genova, Italy. Currently, Helena is finalising an MBA Program commenced in the University of Dundee, Scotland.
