Michael comes to the ANU as a journalist and communicator who has worked in daily newsrooms in Canberra after beginning his career with regional newspapers on the NSW south coast. He has managed major communications and media issues for federal government agencies and has worked as a freelance journalist and writer. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Professional Writing, majoring in journalism, from the University of Canberra.
Michael most recently worked as a journalist at The RiotACT in Canberra where his coverage of the recent Black Summer bushfires and COVID-19 pandemic was substantial. He also has a strong focus on community and human-interest stories. At the Department of Defence, he assisted in the media response to major issues in Afghanistan following the September 11 terror attacks and the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami in Sumatra.
He can also be found playing bass with bands in local venues. As a proud lefty, he also thinks Paul McCartney is still cool. Michael’s focus at ANU is managing media and communications for the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific via the ANU Communications and Engagement team.
